My books of the year
It has become a great tradition on this blog (since last December) to list my favourite books of the year – not necessarily ones which were published in 2014 but which I happen to have read in the past 12 months. So, from the 90 books I’ve read this year, here are the top five by category:
Adult fiction:
1. Kent Haruf – Eventide
2. John Williams – Butcher’s Crossing
3. John Williams – Stoner
4. Susan Barker – The Incarnations
5. David Peace – GB84
Young Adult fiction:
1. Marcus Sedgwick – She is not Invisible
2. Sarah Crossan – The Weight of Water
3. Wolfgang Herndorf – Why We Took the Car
4. Lauren Oliver – Before I Fall
5. Julie Berry – All the Truth That’s in Me
Others:
1. Simon Armitage – Black Roses (poetry)
2. Rupert Thomson – This Party’s got to Stop (memoir)
3. Ian Mortimer – The Time Traveller’s Guide to Medieval England (history)
4. Andrea Ashworth – Once in a House on Fire (memoir)
5. Tony Benn (ed. Ruth Winstone) – The Best of Benn (diaries, journalism, speeches, letters)
